Construction Worker CV Sample: UK, Irish and Australian Conventions

If you are applying in the UK, Ireland, Australia or most of Europe, you need a construction worker CV sample rather than an American resume — and the differences are not just spelling. Card schemes, length, references and personal details all work differently, and using the wrong conventions marks you out immediately.

Below is a complete CV written to UK conventions, plus a breakdown of exactly what changes by country.

The card is the first thing checked

In the UK a CSCS card is effectively the gate to most commercial sites, and the colour tells the reader your level before they read a word of the CV. Put the card type and expiry near the top:

  • Green — Labourer
  • Blue — Skilled Worker
  • Gold — Advanced Craft or Supervisor
  • Black — Manager
  • CPCS or NPORS tickets for plant, with the category code (A09, A17 and so on) — the code matters more than the machine name

Australia uses the White Card (Construction Induction) as the equivalent baseline, plus state-based high risk work licences. Ireland uses Safe Pass and CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme, a different scheme to the UK one despite the name).

Card schemes and validity periods change. Check the issuing body for the country you are applying in rather than relying on any article, including this one — for the UK, that means the official CSCS website, where you can verify a card and its expiry directly.

Two pages, and use them

A UK construction CV that is one page reads as thin, which is the opposite of the American convention. Use the second page for the full certification list and older employment. What you should not do is pad it with soft skills — the extra space is for tickets, plant categories and project detail.

Units and spelling: pick one and stay in it

Mixing “500m3 of concrete” with “operated a 6 foot trench” reads as a copy-pasted CV. If you are applying in the UK, use metric throughout and British spellings. If you have worked in both systems, convert to the reader’s units rather than giving both.

If you are moving between countries

Name the qualification, the issuing body and the country it was earned in, then state what you hold or have applied for locally. A foreign ticket that a reader cannot place is worth less than one they can, so a short parenthetical — “(equivalent to CSCS Blue)” — helps, as long as you are confident the comparison is accurate.

Do not leave gaps unexplained. Time spent relocating or waiting on a card is normal and reads fine when stated plainly.

Mistakes on construction CVs

  • No card details. On UK sites this is close to disqualifying.
  • Plant listed without CPCS or NPORS category codes. “Can drive a dumper” is not the same as “CPCS A09”.
  • American spelling and units on a UK application.
  • A photo or date of birth. Neither belongs on a UK, Irish or Australian CV.
  • One page. Fine in the US, reads as inexperienced elsewhere.
  • No expiry dates on tickets. An expired card is not a card.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include references by name?
“Available on request” is still acceptable in the UK and keeps your referees from being contacted before you know about it. Some agencies will ask for two names up front.

Do I need a cover letter?
For agency work, rarely. For a direct application to a contractor, a short paragraph naming the site type and your availability helps.

How far back should employment go?
Ten years, or to the start of your trade career if shorter. Older roles can be one line each.

Is a CV the same for agency and direct applications?
Same document, but agencies scan for cards and availability first, so keep those at the very top.

For the American version with three worked samples, see the construction worker resume example. For writing the bullets themselves, see the construction laborer job description guide. Welding tickets to list as well? The welder resume sample covers how to write those properly.

If you would rather not write it yourself

The sample above is the whole document. Swap in your own projects and numbers and you will have something stronger than a generic writer would produce.

Do it yourself. A resume builder handles the single-column formatting that application software wants, which is the fiddly part. Take the sample above, replace the content with your own numbers, and you are done in under an hour.

Pay someone to write it. Worth it mainly if you are applying for a specific role you want badly, or moving up into supervision. If you go that route, Resumeble is a US-based writing service – where the writer sits matters on trades work, because someone unfamiliar with the trade flattens your specifics into generic phrasing. If you do, the code HARDHAT10 takes 10% off. Expect to be asked for your numbers either way, so do that homework first regardless of which route you take.
