Carpenter Resume: Two Samples for Rough Framing and Finish Work

A carpenter resume has a problem the other trades do not: “carpenter” covers work that ranges from stacking walls at speed to hanging crown moulding to a sixteenth. A framing contractor and a finish contractor are hiring two different people, and a resume that tries to be both convinces neither.

Two complete samples below — rough carpenter and experienced framer/finish carpenter — and the distinction to make on your own page.

Decide which carpenter you are on the page

If you genuinely do both — and many carpenters do — lead with whichever the posting asks for and keep the other as supporting history. Do not average them into “experienced carpenter”.

Rough carpenter resume sample with three years framing, showing homes framed and responsibility for cutting and stacking for a five-man crew
Rough carpenter, three years

The line that carries this one is “framed 30+ homes” and “ran the saw for a 5-man crew”. Running the saw is a specific, checkable responsibility — it means someone trusted you not to waste material or hold up the wall crew.

Twelve years is enough to be judged on outcomes rather than tasks. “Cut material waste approximately 12%” and “no framing corrections in 3 years” both translate directly into money for a builder, which is the argument at this level.

Numbers a carpenter can produce

  • Homes framed per season — the standard production measure
  • Multi-unit buildings, with unit counts
  • Square footage of the projects, or contract value range
  • Crew size you ran, and apprentices trained
  • Material waste reduced, if you have a figure
  • Framing corrections or callbacks — a low number is a strong line
  • Homes trimmed, for finish work

If you have never tracked these, count addresses or job numbers from a season. More on this in how to quantify physical work on a resume.

Certifications worth holding

  • OSHA 10 — often the minimum for a commercial site; OSHA 30 for lead and supervisory roles. See OSHA 10 vs OSHA 30
  • Fall protection competent person — roof and upper-floor framing
  • Scaffold competent person
  • First Aid / CPR
  • Aerial and scissor lift, for multi-storey work
  • Lead-safe renovation training, if you work on pre-1978 housing in the US

Carpentry is not a licensed trade in most US states the way electrical is, so certifications and demonstrated output carry the weight that a licence would elsewhere. Requirements do vary by state and by contract — check the specific job.

The lead-safe line on that list is worth expanding, because it is the one most carpenters hold incorrectly. EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting rule is two certifications, not one: the individual certified renovator training you took, and a separate firm certification held by the business doing the work. A carpenter with the card working for a company without the firm certification is still non-compliant on pre-1978 housing, and the penalties run per day. On the page this is a small distinction that reads loudly: write “EPA RRP Certified Renovator” with the date, and if you run your own outfit, say the firm is certified too. A remodeller hiring for older housing stock knows exactly what that second line means.

Tools: name the ones that mean something

Every carpenter owns a hammer and a circular saw; saying so tells a reader nothing. What is worth a line is anything that signals the level of work you do — a transit or laser level says layout, a track saw and router say finish work, a full framing nailer set says you arrive ready.

“Own truck and full tool set” belongs in the header. On residential builds a carpenter who needs tools supplied is a slower start.

Mistakes on carpenter resumes

  • “Experienced carpenter” with no specialty. Rough and finish are different hires.
  • No production numbers. Homes per season is the measure the whole industry uses.
  • Listing every hand tool. Assume the basics; name what signals level.
  • Leaving off layout ability. A carpenter who can lay out from prints is worth more than one who only cuts to marks — say so if it is true.
  • Hiding seasonal gaps. Residential framing is seasonal almost everywhere. Name the layoff and move on — see employment gaps on a resume.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a carpenter resume be?
One page under ten years, two if you have supervisory and finish detail worth spelling out.

Should I list every builder I have worked for?
Ten years or three employers, whichever is shorter. Seasonal work for the same contractor across years is one entry.

Do I need a portfolio?
For finish and custom work, photos help enormously and few applicants bring them. For production framing, numbers matter more than pictures.

What if most of my work was self-employed?
List it as a business or as “residential remodeling, various clients” with dates and what you built. Include project counts.

If you would rather not write it yourself

Carpentry sells itself on what you have built. Unit counts, square footage, waste reduction – a writer cannot invent any of it, so the homework is yours whichever route you take.

Do it yourself. A resume builder handles the single-column formatting that application software wants, which is the fiddly part. Take the sample above, replace the content with your own numbers, and you are done in under an hour.

Pay someone to write it. Worth it mainly if you are stepping up to lead carpenter, superintendent or estimating, where the document has to argue about schedule and cost rather than trade skill. If you go that route, Resumeble is a US-based writing service – where the writer sits matters on trades work, because someone unfamiliar with the trade flattens your specifics into generic phrasing. If you do, the code HARDHAT10 takes 10% off. Expect to be asked for your numbers either way, so do that homework first regardless of which route you take.
